Texas Student Has the Best Handwriting in America
Grand National Champ learned of her honor in surprise ceremony
COLUMBUS, OHIO (May 29, 2009)—Today, a student at a private school in Denton, TX, learned she’s officially the best handwriter in America. Bethany Rush, an eighth-grade student at Immaculate Conception Catholic School is the 2009 Grand National Champion of the 18th annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest.
Bethany first was named a state and then national grade-level winner in this year’s competition. The entries from all grade-level national winners are then judged for the one Grand National Champion crown. Expert judges said Bethany demonstrated impeccable slant, size, shape, and spacing with her handwriting in a field of over 200,000 elementary and middle school students. The prizes that Bethany will collect are worth more than $1,500 and include a Nintendo Wii game system. Her classmates also benefit: the class gets a new computer system. And Bethany’s handwriting teacher wins a trip for two to Washington, D.C., home of our nation’s most important handwritten documents.
Awarding the Title
Bethany was surprised with the news that she is the Grand National Champion when school and Zaner-Bloser officials honored her this morning. She thought she was attending a ceremony to receive her national winner certificate, but at that ceremony, Zaner-Bloser officials made the public announcement that she is the 2009 Grand National Champion.
